How many nights in zermatt

I have already provisionally booked my accommodation in Murren. So a switch is not really possible. I have always wanted to see the Matterhorn and in three trips to Switzerland over the years starting in the 80's I have not seen it. I wondered if Zermatt had got more commercialized.

I think it will still be on the agenda, but may choose to stay outside. We do like it a little quieter. How would staying in Tasch work? As long as your expectations are realistic, you should be fine with Zermatt. I was thrilled to see the Matterhorn. Hopefully you'll have better weather than we did and can get up into the mountains to do some hiking. I'm sure it's beautiful. I'm sorry I can't offer any suggestions on places to stay outside of Zermatt.

We stayed in Zermatt at Romantic Hotel Julen, which we loved, but it's not a budget option. Forget all these comments about Zermatt And once you ascend up the lower slopes in Zermatt, the mountain scenery that opens up above you is like nothing anywhere else in the Alps.

The peaks soar far above you, but because of the contour of the lower slopes, you can't appreciate this until you go up. And why should the OP "forget" all those previous comments? The OP wanted information and this forum is called "information sharing" which is exactly what's going on here. Being informed is a good thing, Tom. I do appreciate all the comments and honesty - thats what I love about this forum. When I thought about what Tom said, he is right, I am going to see the Matterhorn I have missed it on past trips.

Thank you to the other comments for provided me with a good idea on what to expect of the town itself. Its not going to be a quiet village experience but thats OK. I may just find a hotel with a good SPA at the quieter end of town with a great view of the Matterhorn. Extra money, but we are friends who like a little luxury once in awhile, and we will be sharing the cost of the room.

I would not 'forget' the true and helpful comments regarding Zermattt. I would also keep in mind that everyone who has posted about Zermattt has actually been there. While the Matterhorn is beautiful and iconic it is not the end-all of all Swiss alpine scenery. If you have a unique place to stay outside of Zermatt, like up in the mountains we did the Basecamp Matterhorn in , you can enjoy the mountains without all of the hassles of the city.

As for scenery, there are many places as pretty, or Swiss, as this area without the crowds. It is a kind of museum, inside of a glacier, with ice crystals and ice sculptures. There is also a snow sports area open all year. If you have a ticket, the snow tubing is free of charge. Even if you are used to beautiful mountain views, I am sure this trip will amaze you.

Glacier Palace. Gornergrat is another beautiful mountain standing at about meters above sea level almost meters lower than Klein Matterhorn with no less stunning views. I got up the Gornergrat by the cogwheel it just takes 30 minutes and then hiked down all the way to Zermatt.

Shares Up Gornergrat the views of the surrounding mountains and a glacier were breathtaking. Luckily, the sky was clear unlike when I visited Klein Matterhorn which allowed me to enjoy this day trip even more. You can see the highest mountain of Switzerland — Mount Rosa also known as the Dufourspitze which stands at meters above sea level.

There are telescopes free to use that also give you all the names of the mountains you can see. Just in June , a new attraction has opened at Gornergrat — Zooom the Matterhorn. It is an interactive museum with virtual activities like paragliding. Virtual paragliding in Zermatt was really, really great. It is just a short experience 3 minutes but good enough for me. Even if you are not into hiking, I highly recommend the short hiking loop at the top of Gornergrat. It takes about minutes and you have superb views already.

Additionally, you can also hike down. It takes several hours and it is a quite steep hike — but it is worth it. I hiked down — all the way to Zermatt. Amongst others, you will pass Lake Riffelsee. It is a small and yet beautiful lake that — on clear days without wind — has the reflection of the Matterhorn.

Either way, hiking in and around Gornergrat is a good way to see more of the stunning nature in Zermatt. The hike was steep downhill and not knee-friendly. I still recommend it, if you are a fit person. It took me about hours, but apparently, it will only take hours to some more sporty people. Another place to visit in Zermatt is Gorner Gorge.

An astonishing million years old is the rock, greenish serpentinite. You do not actually have to visit the gorge and pay the entrance fee — you will see quite a bit already by just hiking down from Gornergrat. And it looks stunning! You can do the above-mentioned activities in 2 days in Zermatt. However, of course, there is much more to do in Zermatt. If you stay longer than 2 days in Zermatt, especially in the summer months, you can spend weeks outdoors exploring the area without getting bored.

Okay, you may think of winter in Zermatt as the only time you can ski. But opportunities for skiing in the Alps are year-round. Go skiing in the early morning, when conditions are at their best.

You can then spend the rest of the day indulging in some summer sun and enjoying a few of the other summer activities on this list. Summer skiing here is closed at noon so that the snow stays fresh during the hottest part of the day. You can summer ski at Klein Matterhorn — here you can enjoy snow sports along 21 km of pistes. Hiking is certainly one of the best things to do in Zermatt.

The town is surrounded by incredible mountains, including the — here we go again — iconic Matterhorn.

There are over km of hiking trails to explore so you can spend days or even weeks doing just that. You can easily embark on a hiking trip on your own or hire a guide for a more informative and directional hiking tour.

You may even spot some of the local wildlife. The most popular hike is probably the 5-lake hike. As the name suggests, you will see 5 lakes during the hike and it is pretty nice. I have done two hikes in Zermatt — hiking down from Gornergrat to Zermatt and the 5-lake walk. Absolutely must do: Go to the Matterhorn Museum. There you can have a virtual experience of Zermatt and the Matterhorn while seeing how this area developed over hundreds of years.

Or decide for indoor activities: billiards, fussball, bowling, climbing wall. How about taking in a movie? And what about those souvenirs you need to get? There are 70 km of prepared winter hiking trails for extensive hikes. The snowshoe trails go further afield into more remote winter landscapes. Experiences for families with children in the fresh mountain air — a dream.

For example, at the playground. Or in the Wolli adventure park. View site in: I am already using the language I want. Weather forecast. Adults, Children Adults 2.
