Whynter 65 pint portable dehumidifier manual

Many owners of pump-equipped dehumidifiers, of every brand, report difficulty removing the plug from the pump socket when initially setting up the pump operation, including multiple instances of the plug breaking off when they resorted to using force. A coin or flathead screwdriver can get into the narrow gap behind the plug and depress the collar, after which the plug comes out easily.

But these acrobatics only spotlight the crappy design. And again, the crappy design is common—not unique to Frigidaire. The other common complaint in negative reviews of pump-equipped dehumidifiers is that the pump itself fails within a few months. Bring a towel. It too is Energy Star certified; it measured a similar The GE reduced the humidity in our test space just as well as the Frigidaire, it filled its tank in our informal overnight test, and its pump had no trouble raising the water 10 feet above the floor.

We prefer the Frigidaire machines over their GE counterpart for the design elements mentioned above. While the pint Frigidaire dehumidifiers have a large, easily gripped top handle, the GE has small, shallow pocket handles on its sides; we found them considerably more difficult to grasp when moving this pound machine around a room.

The GE also offers no means of wrapping the cord up when storing or repositioning it. Its air filter tucks up behind the intake grille, making it a bit more difficult to access for cleaning than those of the Frigidaire machines, which are mounted on the outside. Finally, attaching a garden hose for passive draining is trickier on the GE dehumidifiers because the attachment point is located inside the cramped tank compartment.

Frigidaire puts the attachment point outside the machine—much easier to work with. One bad design element is common to both: that tricky-to-remove drain plug. But none of these differences are dealbreakers. If you need to dehumidify a smallish space up to about square feet , such as a laundry room or bedroom, a pint machine is plenty—and will cost you less up front and to operate. But it shares several of the design details that give the larger, pint Frigidaire models the edge in their category, like the user-friendly external drain-hose attachment.

The low setting is quiet enough to sleep near, and you mostly hear the white noise of the fan, not the mechanical chugging of the compressor as on some other machines.

Like the larger Frigidaires, the FFADW1 has handy cord-storage hooks on the back, meaning you can wrap the cord out of the way when moving it around or putting it in storage. It also has the handy external drain-hose attachment that we like on the bigger machines. Instead of a tuck-away top handle, though, it has pocket handles on the sides. We prefer the former, but the pocket handles give enough grip to move it securely it weighs about 35 pounds.

But very few smart models are available. Setting up the FGACW1 for Wi-Fi was straightforward: We downloaded the app to an Android phone and followed the steps it gave to connect the dehumidifier to our office network, and then the dehumidifier and the app automatically linked up. Frigidaire also plans to release an upgraded physical filter for the machine later this year, but it will not be true HEPA.

Having Wi-Fi adds convenience, but also cost; only pay for it if you know you need it. Where all the other models we tested came in at around 46 or 47 decibels on low, the Hisense clocked in at That makes it a poor choice for any living space.

As well, it produces a machine-rattling thunk when the compressor kicks on—enough to jar you from sleep or interrupt a Zoom chat. It has a tuck-away handle on the top of the machine and handy cord-storage hooks on the back.

The Midea Cube series differs in design and operation from every other dehumidifier on the market, in ways that seem, on first look, as clever as the ways its U window air conditioners differ from the rest of the pack. This video from Midea shows how in detail, but the key points are as follows. Instead of a small drainage tank that sits inside the body of the machine, the Cube dehumidifiers have a large freestanding tank 4.

The larger tank means less-frequent need to empty it, and when you do need to, the machine unit simply lifts off. Because a full 4. And if you only need a dehumidifier seasonally, the Cubes pack down smaller than other dehumidifiers: the machine units nestle inside the tanks, effectively halving the room they take up.

They also have an WiFi connectivity and an app, allowing you to monitor, control, and receive alerts from them remotely. And, like other dehumidifiers, they can be set to passively empty themselves directly into a sink or floor drain. We had especially high hopes for the former, because a Wi-Fi-and-pump combination is rare.

But the shortcomings of the LGs outweighed this. Both are pint machines and performed similarly to our top pick Frigidaires and runner-up GE on raw dehumidification, but both also stood out for an unwanted reason: compressor noise.

Although the LGs measured similarly even a bit lower in terms of their decibel output, their compressors were much more audible, emitting a persistent mechanical hum that was easily heard over the white-noise of their fans. Hooking up the pump of the UDKOJ5 also adds an extra step: mounting a siphon inside the machine, as well as plugging the pump hose into the external socket. It frequently disconnected during our testing.

The pint Hisense DHK1G lacks the pump that makes its pint big brother useful for unoccupied basements and other unfrequented spaces, and is also less powerful while being just as loud. The square-footage ratings they claim are wildly overblown. They are highly and heavily reviewed on Amazon—but Fakespot gives them only a C rating, with the quality of reviews rated low.

Similarly overblown claims and questionable customer support led us to dismiss the dehumidifiers made by Tosot , Vremi , Midea. In past guides, we had difficulty getting customer support from Whynter ; again, we think better-known brands will serve you better on warranties and repairs. Toshiba a Home Depot exclusive only offers a pumpless pint machine, and it gets an alarming number of complaints about the condenser icing up, the tank leaking, the motor overheating, and the controls not working.

Finally, we dismissed the numerous no-name brands that can now be found on Amazon. They may save you a few dollars, but we strongly doubt they have the quality and customer service of the better-known manufacturers. Yes, dehumidifiers work by removing moisture from the air. The dehumidifier size is determined by the room size. All dehumidifiers need to have their tanks emptied regularly, but to do so you can continuously drain the dehumidifier into a sink or out a window with a pump-equipped model or passively into a floor drain.

Otherwise, you have to dump the tank manually. Tim Heffernan is a senior staff writer at Wirecutter and a former writer-editor for The Atlantic, Esquire, and others.

He has anchored our unequaled coverage of air purifiers and water filters since Our pick. Frigidaire FFAPW1 The best dehumidifier This model is powerful enough for spaces up to 1, square feet, its built-in pump offers lots of drainage options, and design details make it the easiest dehumidifier to live with. Frigidaire FFADW1 A similar pumpless model Otherwise identical, this dehumidifier lacks a pump, limiting you to manually emptying the tank or passively sending the water down a floor drain.

Also great. Frigidaire FFADW1 A great, cheaper dehumidifier for smaller spaces This compact, efficient, affordable dehumidifier is designed for smaller spaces like bedrooms and laundry rooms. Hisense DHKP1WG Loud, effective, basement-worthy This pint pump-equipped machine is too loud for living spaces, but it is as effective as and cheaper than our top pick—an option for unoccupied areas up to 1, square feet.
