When do darien and serena start dating
Part of the problem is that Tuxedo Mask's fighting prowess boils down to two moves: throwing roses and carrying people to safety.
Now we're not saying that rose-throwing isn't helpful; he does manage to damage the occasional energy-sucking device. But he has a tendency to swoop in, throw his rose, and then peace out. At some point, he does start using a cane because everything has to be tuxedo-themed , but it's not super useful against, you know, actual weapons.
Few supposed superheroes could benefit from a martial arts class or two as Tuxedo Mask — boxing, tae kwon do, fencing — hell, we'll take pillow fighting at this point. This parody film perfectly points out Tuxedo Mask's utter uselessness. For example, the first time that Mamoru and Usagi meet as Tuxedo Mask and Sailor Moon, she is crying because she's having trouble defeating Morga.
Tuxedo Mask tells her, "You must remember, crying isn't going to solve any of your problems. It just makes you cry more. And that's exactly what happens. Sailor Moon just cries harder. Great advice, asshole. In fact, her crying helps her defeat Morga, because it basically turns into supersonic waves with help from her hair thingies, which knocks Morga out.
So not only did Tuxedo Mask screw up on a basic emotional support level, he actually gave her the exact wrong advice. Crying literally solved Sailor Moon's problem. Look, we get it.
The s were not anyone's fashion peak. But wearing lavender pleated-front pants, apparently of your own free will? We think Usagi is making the right face here. The truly unfortunate thing is that this seems to be his favorite outfit. If you need further proof of his aggressively horrible sense of style, Buzzfeed made a list of Mamoru's crimes against fashion. Plus, there was his Moonlight Knight getup, shown above. Is this racist? It seems like it's racist. Every time we look at it, we think of those "We're a culture, not a costume" ads.
Even when he's suffering from a memory wipe, Mamoru manages to suck. The one pro? At least this incarnation of Mamoru has an actual sword. If Tuxedo Mask can't fight, and he's terrible at giving the Sailor Scouts advice, what can he do? Okay, this is probably the point of the entire series, a reversal of the usual heroic roles, where Sailor Moon is the hero and Tuxedo Mask is the damsel in distress.
When Beryl and her dark powers reawaken in the present, it triggers the return of the heroes to stop her from wreaking havoc again. The names weren't chosen at random. Usagi is Japanese for "rabbit. Mamoru Chiba translates into "Earth protector," reflecting that he fills the role of Earth's Sailor Scout.
Their past-life names are significant too. Endymion, in Greek myth, was a shepherd who fell in love with the moon goddess Selene, a name that's close to "Serenity. By contrast, the meaning of "Tuxedo Mask" is completely clear. He is, quite literally, a guy in a tuxedo and a mask. As Prince Endymion, he drove Queen Beryl crazy with desire without even trying. In the present, after Beryl reawakened to her past life, she had the same obsession with making Endymion her own.
Rei even dated Mamoru when he and Serena were on the outs, but she eventually conceded it was Usagi who held his heart. Though, she still freaked out to learn that in the future, Usagi and Mamoru were not only married, they had little Chibiusa. Chibiusa also wound up crushing on Mamoru when she fled into her past the series' present.
Despising Usagi, she got in the couple's way as often as possible. Mamoru found it amusing - Usagi not so much. Motoki, a clerk at the game center where Usagi plays regularly, was one of them, at least in Usagi's head.
It's obvious to viewers that he sees her as a little sister, but Usagi was convinced their relationship could blossom into love. It didn't; in fact he was happily dating someone else. While Usagi crushed on handsome guys quite a bit, none of the others were noteworthy. Prince Demande of the Black Moon Clan was noteworthy.
He became obsessed with Queen Neo-Serenity, Usagi's adult self, from the moment he saw her. He sought to possess Serenity by possessing Sailor Moon — but in the end, he failed. From what we see of their past life, Serenity and Endymion were a perfect fit. By contrast, Usagi and Mamoru have very little in common. Usagi is a mess. She's goodhearted but lazy, disorganized, perpetually snarfing food and late for everything.
Usagi plods through school with grades that make her parents despair. She proves herself as a hero but nobody sees her as princess material. In the manga, he's smart enough to attend a top-tier high school; in the anime, he's in college at If you combine his academic skills with Usagi's, you'd end up with someone well above average.
Despite all the differences, though, their love endured. Manga Mamoru is a high-school student of seventeen, while Usagi's only fourteen. For some fans, that's pushing into very uncomfortable territory.
In the anime, they're not knocking boots, at least. Mamoru's in college, though, which makes the age difference feel more drastic. Possibly it's meant to reflect teens' fantasies that someone attractive and older would find them attractive. Certainly there are other, similar relationships in the show. Usagi's classmate Naru, for instance, falls for Nephrite, one of Beryl's agents, an attraction he shamelessly exploits. Demande has no qualms hitting on the younger girl.
However that's not entirely satisfying, any more than when American comics have used the same rationale. By the start of the Black Moon arc, Usagi and Mamoru seem a solid couple. Then Mamoru breaks up with Usagi without explanation, and becomes cold, even mean toward her. Usagi's heart breaks, but Mamoru doesn't care. Or so it seems. The truth is, he's having nightmare visions in which a mystery voice disrupts their wedding day, warning that their marriage will doom the world, and lead to Sailor Moon's death.
Mamoru graduates from high school and decides to go to college. But instead of studying in Japan, he leaves for America instead. And with a couple like Usagi and Mamoru , who have known each other in this and past lifetimes, it seems even more likely. Before Mamoru gets on a plane to leave for America, he gives Usagi a heart-shaped jewel ring, which he places on her left ring finger.
Almost immediately after the revelation of their past lives and the love they had for each other during the Silver Millennium, Queen Beryl kidnaps and brainwashes Mamoru to serve her. Usagi has a lot of trouble dealing with this, and later, when fighting a brainwashed Tuxedo Mask, she has trouble defending herself. But fans of this revelation might be disappointed to learn that in the manga, Mamoru already knows that Usagi is Sailor Moon. Granted, the ages of a middle schooler and high school are a little different in Japan, but it still gives a lot of people the willies.
Usagi turns 15 in June, just two months before Mamoru turns 17, putting them less than two years apart.
